Vézelay

The Mary Magdalena Church of Vézelay is almost a thousand years old, and is a masterpiece of medieval cathedral builders. Not in size, but because of the role of light. Even the sun underlined the divine message that was spread in the church. The Church of Mary Magdalene is built in such a way that the sunlight penetrates symbolically.
On June 24th, the birthday of John the Baptist, the sun is set in such a way that the light falls in places in the central aisle. This symbolizes stepping stones to cross the mythical Jordan River. The Magdalena Church is on the UNESCO World Heritage list - next to the Taj Mahal in India and the Borobudur in Indonesia.
